LGBTQ+

LGBTQIA+ defined?

L stands for lesbian, and this refers to someone who is a woman who is attracted to other women

G stands for Gay and refers to a man who is attracted to other men.

B stands for bisexual, and this is a person who is attracted to more than one gender identity, such as men and women or someone who is attracted to two other genders. Someone who is bisexual does not always experience equal attraction to two different genders. They may be more attracted to one over the other, or it can change over time.

T stands for transgender. This refers to someone whose gender identity is different from the biological sex they were assigned at birth. For example, a transgender man could be someone who was born a biological female but transitions to a man so they can identify with the gender that authentically reflects who they are.

Q stands for Queer. This was originally a hate term or slur that was reclaimed by LGBTQIA+ people. Queer refers to a person who does not identify with gender or sexual binaries, or someone who rejects labels. It can also be an umbrella term for anyone who is not straight or cisgender.  Q can also stand for questioning which refers to someone who is still exploring their gender identity or sexuality or is not sure about how they identify.

The "+" acknowledges that there are many gender identities and forms of sexual expression that aren't expressed within this acronym. For example: Pansexual refers to a person who is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity. A Non-binary is a person who does not identify with the gender binary of man or woman.

Is it Lgbtq or Lgbtqia plus?

Both acronyms are used within the community to refer to people who do not identify as heterosexual (straight) or cisgender. The LGBTQIA+ acronym is more inclusive and recognises a larger range of identities compared to LGBTQ. Language and terminology used for gender identities and sexual orientations are constantly evolving. Thus, it’s important to remain respectful of all identities and use language that is up-to-date and inclusive.
