What does Bisexual mean?
Bisexuality is a term used to describe romantic or sexual attraction to two genders, typically men and women but it can also be two other genders. The reason why this term is different to pansexual (romantic and sexual attraction to all genders) is that for many bisexual people, the “bi” indicates an attraction to people of their own gender as well as other genders. Bisexual people are diverse, and every individual will perceive their sexual orientation differently. Some could experience equal attraction to men and women, while other people might have a stronger attraction to one gender over another.
Furthermore, a person who is attracted to both men and women may not identify as bisexual, they might identify as primarily gay or heterosexual, or they may not want to label their sexuality at all. Whereas in other cases, a bisexual person might have a romantic attraction to men and women but only wish to have an emotional or physical relationship with people from one gender. It's important to remember that the attraction is not always weighted evenly and depends on a variety of factors.
What is the symbol for bisexuality?
1. The Bi angles
The original symbol for bisexuals is the bi angles which consists of two upside-down overlapping triangles. One is blue and one is pink. there is a small part within the symbol where the triangles overlap, and this is purple. These triangles were a familiar tactic from World War two associated with the concentration camps. This was the first symbol used to represent the bisexual community.
2. The double moon
The bisexual double mood was created by Vivian Wagner in 1998 as an alternative to the bi angles symbol. Many people in the LGBTQIA+ community believed the use of a symbol associated with persecution and violence was problematic. Therefore, the double moon offered a less controversial alternative. This symbol is often used by the bisexual community in Germany and surrounding countries, but it is also used across the world.
3. Bisexual Pride flag
The bisexual Pride flag was created and designed by Michael Page in 1998. This flag was created to increase the visibility of the bisexual community within society and within the LGBTQIA+ community. The colours were selected to overlap in a pattern of the ‘bi angles’ symbol. There are three colours in this flag. Pink represents the women, blue represents men, and the purple in the middle represents physical attraction to both genders. The purple in the flag is said to blend unnoticeably into both the pink and blue, similar to how bisexual people blend unnoticeably into the gay, lesbian and straight communities.
There are many other symbols to celebrate this community such as a combination of the standard symbols for male and female tied together by an infinity symbol. These symbols are an integral part of celebrating and uplifting the bisexual community. Symbols support those in the LGBTQIA+ community and allows people to identify others like them at pride celebrations and the wider community. Visible symbols are also a way to outwardly display to the world that bisexual people exist. Symbols can also be used to show solidarity with others in the community.
